Valet or self storage

Valet shelves your things on their own pallet and bills you for the volume they actually occupy, from 1,250,000₫ a month. You never visit; you ask for what you want and we bring it.

Self storage rents you a whole locked unit with 24/7 access, from 1,550,000₫ a month. The unit is yours whether it is full or half empty, which is what makes it dearer for the same things. A one-month deposit applies.

Estimating what you need

• Seasonal clothes, suitcases and a few boxes of books: Small, about 12 boxes, from 1,250,000₫.
• One bedroom, or a one-bedroom apartment: Medium, about 24 boxes, from 2,450,000₫.
• A two to three bedroom home: Large, about 48 boxes, from 4,900,000₫.

The charges always worth asking about

1. Transport. Who moves it, at what price, and whether it is charged both ways. Ours is a one-off, from 3,300,000₫ to collect and from 5,100,000₫ for collection and return together.
2. Packing and materials. Inside that one-off fee, along with the truck and the crew. No surcharge for distance or stairs.
3. Retrieval. The final return is included in your fee; an extra trip before then is 700,000₫. This is the one people forget when comparing quotes, and it matters a lot if you expect to retrieve often.
4. Climate control. Whether it is offered and what the difference costs. For wood and leather in this city it is not the place to economise.
5. Cancellation. Ours returns everything free within the first 30 days.

Compared with keeping things at home

Divide one month of rent by your floor area, then multiply by the area your stored things occupy. For most apartments in this city that number is higher than storing the same things properly.
