Four different products get called "storage" in this city and they are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one is what makes storage feel expensive. Here is what each is actually for.

1. Self storage

You rent a locked unit and hold the only key. You arrange your own transport and do your own lifting, and you can walk in whenever you like, usually 24/7. You pay for the whole unit whether it is full or half empty.

Right for: anyone who needs to get at their things often, wants to rearrange them, or is storing stock they dip into weekly.

2. Valet storage

A company collects from your door, stores your things, and brings back what you ask for. There is no unit with your name on it. You are billed for the volume your belongings actually occupy, which is why it works out cheaper than a unit for the same things. Retrieval is booked ahead rather than instant.

Right for: storing and forgetting. A trip, a renovation, a gap between leases, a home that has run out of room.

3. Storage with a moving company

A removals firm holds your things between two homes. Convenient if they are already doing your move, and priced for weeks rather than months. Inventories are usually at the level of "14 boxes and a sofa".

Right for: a short, defined gap in a move you have already booked with them.

4. Luggage storage

Hourly or daily lockers and shop-counter drop-offs for travellers, listed by aggregators like Radical Storage and Bounce. Priced per bag per day.

Right for: a suitcase for an afternoon between checkout and a flight. Storing a household this way for months costs many times what monthly storage costs.

The one question that decides it

How often will you need to reach your things?

Weekly or more. Self storage. You are paying for access, and access is what you need.
Once or twice, or not until the end. Valet. You are paying for volume, and you should not also pay for empty space and your own time.
You genuinely do not know what is in there. This is the case for an item-level catalogue. A receipt saying "12 boxes" is not an inventory, and after six months you will not remember.

What to ask before you sign anything

Is the quote monthly, or is there also a one-off collection fee? Ask for both numbers.
Does the collection fee include packing, materials, the truck and the crew, or are those extra?
Is there a surcharge for distance, or for stairs?
What does it cost to get one item back before the end?
Air-conditioned or not, and what is the difference in price? In this climate it matters for wood, leather, paper and electronics.
How is the inventory recorded, and can you see it without phoning anyone?
What is the cancellation term if your plans change?

Do I need air-conditioned storage in Ho Chi Minh City?

For solid wood, leather, paper, textiles, instruments and electronics, yes. Humidity is what does the damage here, not heat. For sealed boxes of kitchenware or plastic furniture, standard is fine.
